The Afghanistan Diaries: Making it Work Edition

I finally got wi-fi in my room. You might be wondering how I managed that with a broken computer. Well I'll tell you. First, I borrowed a TV/monitor from a guy I work with. Second, I borrowed a VGA cable from a guy who lives in the room next door. Then, I hooked it all up to my broken computer, and voila, I have a functional computer again. For now at least.

My quest for a new computer has been both fruitful and expensive. I'm still not entirely sure if I want to build it myself or just buy a custom computer. I imagine that building it myself would be slightly more cost effective, but is it worth the hassle of trying to put together a computer on my own? If you have any opinions on the subject, please make them known in the comments section.

In other news, I should be going home soon. I'm currently looking at my housing options, and hopefully I'll find a nice place for me and my wife. I'm not looking forward to jumping right back into regular work when I get back, but at least it's better than being in Afghanistan.

  1. I always recommend building your own. That's what I do. It's not has hard as people think, and there's a million guides out there. Biggest things are making sure the parts you want are compatible with one another, and not bending a pin on the processor.

  2. I definitely agree with everyone who thinks I should build it myself. I'm just worried that I'd break something or bend something or catch something on fire and have only myself to blame. Plus I don't quite understand the physics behind the static band thingies.

  3. You know, those things you wear on your risk so you don't short out any of your computer's components.

  4. Oh *those*..... yeah, I never bother with them. I just make sure I'm not doing it in my socks, and touch a lamp every once in a while.
